Surgery News: Rumors Circulate Michael Jackson's Death May Be Linked To Demerol--What Is Demerol (Meperidine)?

Friday June 26, 2009
There are rumors today that Michael Jackson's death may be a result of using demerol, a pain medication frequently used after surgery. If you are planning surgery, your surgeon may recommend or prescribe Demerol.

So what is Demerol, and should you be concerned if it is prescribed after surgery? Demerol is a synthetic painkiller and is often described as being 10-20 times stronger than morphine. It is typically given via an IV in the hospital setting after surgery. It can be given in a pill form as well. It is highly addictive, and is only used short term for surgical pain in most cases. It typically provides excellent relief for surgical pain, but it does have side effects. Most notably in Jackson's case, is the fact that large doses can decrease or completely stop respiratory drive-that is the brain's signal telling the body it needs to breathe.

Should you be concerned if your surgeon prescribes pain medication after your surgery? Probably not. It is an excellent pain medication when USED AS DIRECTED. It is not appropriate, however, for individuals who have a history of addiction. It can also cause constipation, which is the primary complaint most patients have with the drug when taking it after surgery.
