Family Member Hospitalized For Surgery Over The Holidays?

If you have a loved one in the hospital during the holiday season, you may want to take a gift to the hospital.  Just be warned that there are a few gifts that aren't appropriate for the hospital.

You may want to skip fresh flowers.  Many areas of the hospital prohibit flowers, as they can cause allergic reactions among patients and are considered a risk for infection in some patient populations.

You will also want to avoid bringing food or drink items, unless you specifically know the patient is allowed to eat a full diet.  Many patients are not permitted to eat at all, or have restricted diets, so the treats you bring may be a forbidden temptation.

Consider bringing something that will help to pass the time, such as a book, magazine, movie or something else that can help occupy their time.  Just remember that if your loved one is tired, or quite ill, they may not be up to having guests for an extended period of time.
