For Tanya Angus, surgery was a last resort to control her "growth spurt".  The 31 year old is 6 feet 11 inches tall and 372 pounds, and she is desperate to find a way to control the growth being caused by a brain tumor.

This week, she found out that surgery is not an option for her, and the uncontrollable growth may continue.  Thus far, she has not responded to treatment with medications.  Doctors believe that surgery she could be paralyzed, or even die, if she has the brain surgery.

The pituitary gland is responsible for the production of growth hormone, which controls our growth in childhood and adolescence.  In this case, a tumor on the pituitary gland triggered a growth period in Tanya Angus' early 20's, which has not stopped.

Pituitary surgery is often performed using a nasal approach, but can be performed using a incision in the scalp and skull.
