Pregnancy after weight loss surgery is safer than being obese without surgery, according to a new study. The study shows that women who had weight loss surgery are three times less likely to develop gestational diabetes and also less likely to need a caesarian section.
Women in the study group were 19% less likely to develop diabetes during their pregnancy and 15% less likely to need a surgical delivery.
It is important to remember that patients are advised to wait no less than 18 months after gastric bypass weight loss surgeries before getting pregnant. It can be difficult to get adequate nutrition to healthfully support a fetus in the months following the procedure when weight loss is most extreme. One exception to that rule is adjustable gastric bands, which can be deflated during pregnancy and reinflated after the procedure to allow appropriate caloric intake.
