Toronto No Longer Requires Transgendered To Have Surgery To Change Birth Certificate

By October 24, 2012

For transgendered people, Toronto may suddenly seem like a wonderful place to live.

In Toronto, a transgendered individual may change their gender on their birth certificate without completing (or even starting) the extremely costly process of having gender reassignment surgery.

This change is especially welcome by those who are living as a sex other than that on their birth certificate, often having an appearance that is decidedly different than what their documents would lead one to expect.  For example, when changing from female to male, taking testosterone often results in facial hair and a deeper voice, yet the birth certificate would still state female because no surgery had taken place.

Most doctors who specialize in gender reassignment surgery require the individual to live as the sex they want to become for an extended period of time before the surgery will be performed.
