Larry Hagman, 81, has died of cancer in a Dallas hospital on Friday.
Hagman was best known for his role as J.R. Ewing in the night time soap opera Dallas, and as Major Anthony Nelson in the sitcom I Dream of Jeanie. The season cliffhanger "Who Shot J.R.?" made television history, keeping viewers in suspense for months over the summer break, wondering who shot the double-crossing, backstabbing and conniving oil baron.
Hagman died of throat cancer, but it was not his first battle with cancer. In 1995 he received a liver transplant after he was diagnosed with both liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver. He became an outspoken proponent of organ donation, encouraging Americans to help others with the gift of life.
Larry Hagman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maj, and their two children.
