After a landmark lawsuit brought by Oregon state employee Alec Esquival, the state of Oregon will now cover treatment for transgendered individuals who are seeking gender reassignment surgery.
While Oregon law prevented insurance companies from treating transgendered individuals differently than other individuals they insured, the state itself was not following the guidelines. The suit brought by Esquival ended in an out of court settlement for $36,000 and the state changing their policies. State employees in Oregon will now have insurance coverage that includes paying for surgeries, prescriptions and other treatment related to gender reassignment.
