Definition: An attending surgeon is a doctor who has completed their training and is practicing their chosen surgical specialty. An attending may also oversee the practice and education of medical students, interns, residents and fellows.

An attending is a fully credentialed physician who can practice medicine independently and is considered an expert in their field.

Examples:
After the resident asked me questions about my health, the attending also reviewed my medical history and made the final decision about my care.
