Definition: Difficulty breathing, including shortness of breath, heavy or labored breathing. The term does not refer to heavy breathing after exercise or otherwise appropriate shortness of breath, rather, it refers to difficulty breathing caused by a medical issue.
Pronunciation: diss-knee-uh
Also Known As: difficulty of breathing, shortness of breath, SOB,
Common Misspellings: dispnea, dyspneea, disknea, disnea, dispneuh, disneuh,
Examples: The patient was suffering from dyspnea after an asthma attack so the surgery was rescheduled for another day.
