From the article: Do You Really Need Surgery?
When patients are considering having surgery they are often encouraged to seek out a second opinion. Did you take the time to talk to a second surgeon? Why or why not? Share Your Reasons
2nd or a 3rd opinion--don't give up!
- In my case, I have waited several years for my gallbladder removal. The HIDA scan said it was 'Normal' with an Ejection Fraction of 97%. However, I had already been told several years earlier that 'someday' surgery would be necessary. My body responded to the HIDA with a serious increase in pain, other symptoms and even stronger spasms than before (a RARE response). Even with a '97% EF,' I knew I needed the surgery NOW; the first two surgeons had different reasons but both said they would not do it on a 'normal' gallbladder. (When surgery was suggested years ago, it was BEFORE the HIDA scan--the symptoms are worse, so why is depending on the scan results so absolute?) This is changing! Had I not been so desperate I would have not tried yet another surgeon (and spent the large copay for each one). This one (with great referrals & reputation) said my history, symptoms and examination told him 'I more than met the need for gallbladder surgery.' I am thankful surgery is in a few weeks.
