Surgery News: Steve Jobs Has Liver Transplant Surgery--Myths About The Rich and Transplants

Tuesday June 23, 2009
Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Computers and current Chief Executive has had a successful liver transplant surgery. While information is limited, it is believed that he had his surgery in Tennessee, at an undisclosed transplant center.

So, did Jobs get a liver because he is rich? No. The algorithm that determines how recipients show up on the liver transplant list does not take net worth or fame into account. Do sicker people get an organ sooner? Yes, in some cases they do, if they are waiting for a liver transplant. Truly, it doesn't matter how much money you have or how famous you are when it comes to receiving an organ. What does matter is the geographic area where you sign up for the waiting list, how many centers at which you register, the organ you are waiting for and those types of factors.

So, how do rich and famous people get transplants so fast? Well, they don't always get transplants faster. Remember that Walter Payton, the famous football player, died waiting for a liver.

Natalie Cole, singer and daughter of Nat King Cole, received a kidney earlier this year. A fan saw her on television talking about her need for a transplant and when their family member became a donor the family chose to direct one of the kidneys to Cole. George Lopez received a kidney in 2005, but it was donated by his wife.

One thing that the rich and famous do to improve their chances of getting an organ more quickly is being listed at multiple transplant centers. There is a fee involved with doing so, but this opportunity is available to everyone who is waiting for an organ. Multiple listing can greatly increase the chances of receiving an organ, or can shorten the waiting time for an organ.

With all the swirling controversy about Jobs' transplant and how he received it, try to remember one thing, the rich and famous also become donors. Natasha Richardson saved lives earlier this year when her family chose to donate her organs to people in need.

(1) Eileen OConnor says:

I was shocked and saddened to read the news article about Steve Jobs and wonder if his illness is due to the unintentional consequences associated with exposure to this technology.

I have no doubt in my mind that I am a victim to long term exposure to radiation from a phone mast/cell tower.
I suffered for years with sleep problems, headaches, vertigo, skin rashes, heart palpitations and low white blood cells only to be told by my doctor that it was either stress or a virus. I now realise that my symptoms are known as a condition called electrosensitivity (ES). I eventually developed breast cancer at the age of 38 in November, 2001.

Chemo was difficult as I was suffering with low immunity before they even started treatment. I only managed to get through the six months treatment by receiving neutropen injections, which forced the white blood cells out of my bone marrow. However, on three occasions I left the area where I lived to an area free from radiation, much to my surprise, my white blood cell count shot up, which enabled me to receive the chemo without needing the neutropen injections. It should be pointed out that many people living in our tiny village also suffered with low white blood cells.

I am now clear of breast cancer, but still suffer with ES symptoms. It had an enormous impact on my life and the lives of my family. It has been a long hard battle not only against breast cancer, but also against the insensitive siting of the T-Mobile phone mast which was 100 metres from my home. I discovered that I was living in a cancer cluster which is one of many since discovered around phone masts worldwide. My health took another downturn in 2007. I had stopped taking the cancer drug tamoxifen after 5 years and had developed a large growth and pre cancer cells in my womb and had a full hysterectomy.

If only I’d known about the research in connection with EMF’s, I might have realised that it is not a good idea to live 100 metres from a 22.5 metre phone mast. Out of our tiny hamlet in Wishaw four other ladies developed breast cancer at the same time out of the 18 houses around surrounding the mast and one man died of motor neurone disease. I had been living next to the mast for over seven years before I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Don’t become another victim, please help the public by demanding protection and regulation from the Government. Educate yourself by reading the Rewrie.me eMagazine. Go to http://www.rewire.me
Its a highly interactive full screen PDF with links to video, virtual reality, audio and scientific studies about the dangers of the electromagnetic fields that are produced by our modern technology.

We have attempted to present this information in a way that is easy to read and understand with colourful graphics and “Rich Media” as support materials. The Radiation Research Trust are the distributors and sponsors of the publication and we hope to use this medium to reach the governments and their citizens from all over the world that are still unaware of the illnesses that are caused by wireless technologies.

I believe that I got breast cancer from a phone mast and I would like to be able to share my circumstances with others so they can avoid the dangers of unsafe levels of radiation by applying the precautionary principle and live a long and healthy life. That is what the magazine and campaign is all about. I am hoping that you can help me spread the word by forwarding this information on to others who you think might be interested in the subject matter.

You can also download further information and research from the Radiation Research Trust website http://www.radiationresearch.org it includes the following powerpoint presentation which contains further details about my story: http://www.radiationresearch.org/pdfs/eileen_my_story.pdf
