Surgery News: Twitter and Tweets-Updating Family When The Waiting Room Is On Another Continent

Monday July 13, 2009
Here's the dilemma: a patient comes to the United States for a surgery that can't be done at home in Mongolia but most of their family stays at home. How do you let them know everything is going well in surgery?

The Answer: Use Twitter and tweet updates.

In order to keep family in the loop and updated on 10 year old Anand's condition, surgical staff at Kansas City's Children's Mercy Hospital provided timely updates on the progress of the surgery using Twitter. That way, family in the waiting room and family a continent away were receiving updates at the same time, without making international phone calls.

The idea seems to be a popular one, rather than the surgeon leaving the OR to update family members, OR staff can use Twitter to share what is happening as often as they like.
