Insurance and Sex Change—Gender Reassignment Surgery

By December 10, 2011

Follow me on:

If you want gender reassignment surgery, some good news is probably long overdue when it comes to the financing of sex change procedures.

According to The Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights organization, the number of companies that pay for the procedures doubled in 2011.  According to the group, ten years ago no companies paid for gender reassignment procedures.  In 2009, 49 companies paid, and in 2011, 207 of the 636 businesses surveyed indicated that their insurance would pay for gender reassignment.

The increase in companies willing to obtain insurance that will pay for the procedures indicate that the idea that this surgery is not a cosmetic procedure, rather it is a procedure to make the body match what the brain feels, is becoming better understood.

Companies new to the list include Apple, Kellogg, Sprint, Levi-Strauss, Best Buy, Nordstrom and Office Depot.
