Definition: Astigmatism is a common eye condition that results in blurred vision.

An astigmatism can be caused by an irregularity within the lens of the eye, or in the cornea, or both.

An astigmatism is typically diagnosed with an eye exam, however, in mild cases, there may be no symptoms and no treatment required. For those with an astigmatism that is severe enough to be noticeable, blurred vision, squinting and headaches may be present.

Treatment of an astigmatism is typically done with corrective lenses including glasses and contact lenses, or eye surgery. The severity of the astigmatism, and other conditions that may be present, may dictate the type of contact lenses that are appropriate for treatment. For some, a type of contact lens called a toric contact lens may be necessary.

An astigmatism may be present in one or both eyes.
