Definition:
A hemorrhoid is a distended, or inflamed, blood vessel in the area of the anus or rectum. Hemorrhoids that appear around the anus, or outside of the body, are referred to as "external" hemorrhoids, while those that are found in the rectum are referred to as "internal hemorrhoids."
External hemorrhoids can be treated in a variety of ways, ranging from ointments to surgery.
